Barbados

Barbados, beyond the sunbed.

Beyond the west coast resorts, an island of rum distilleries, chattel house villages, fish fry Fridays and a Bajan culture that runs deep.

Barbados rewards those who step back from the shoreline. The Scotland District rolls across the island’s interior in a landscape that surprises first-time visitors. Oistins on a Friday night is less a fish fry than a community ritual. The rum distilleries of the interior carry centuries of craft in every pour. St Nicholas Abbey sits at the intersection of plantation history and genuine architectural beauty, honestly told. Our curators look for Bajans who know their island properly — the distillery guide steeped in sugar and rum history, the Oistins fisherman who supplies the same stall his father did, the chattel house historian who reads vernacular architecture like a first language.
