Belize

Belize, small and extraordinary.

Beyond the barrier reef, a country of Maya ruins, jungle lodges, river wildlife and Creole traditions that punch well above their size.

Belize compresses an unlikely amount into a small frame. The barrier reef runs the length of the coast, sheltering atolls and dive walls that rank among the Caribbean’s finest. Inland, the jungle holds Maya ceremonial sites still half-swallowed by canopy. The Cayo district moves at a river pace — cave tubing, howler monkeys, lodges built into the forest edge. Belize City carries a Creole and Garifuna culture that belongs to nowhere else. Our curators look for those who know this country from the inside — the Maya sites guide fluent in both archaeology and forest, the reef operator who learned these waters young, the Garifuna cook keeping traditions the tourist trail never reaches.
